Join me! The Giving Lens Peru Workshop

In May, I’ll be digging out my sharpie to check off a major bucket-list item and I am inviting you to join me as I visit Machu Picchu for the first time during The Giving Lens Peru Workshop.

I can distinctly remember reading about the fabled Inca City and immediately knowing I’d be headed there as soon as I graduated high school and bought a backpack. Somehow, my arrival has been delayed by 13 years but I’m actually happy I waited because rather than traveling alone, I will co-lead The Giving Lens workshop that visits the sacred city.

Peru Workshop Highlights

From May 17-25, 2015, I will co-lead The Giving Lens workshop in Cusco, Peru. Along with visiting Machu Picchu, we’ll also work alongside the Picaflor House, whose staff works tirelessly to provide a safe place for children who are struggling in Cusco.

From soaring peaks to deep valleys, come explore Peru with The Giving Lens and we’ll lead the way to a bucket list topper: Machu Picchu. We will wander the cobbled streets of Cusco, too, and spend precious time with the amazing kids at Picaflor House. This year’s trip is co-led by Peyton Hale, and our newest member of the TGL tribe, Jeff Bartlett!

Picaflor and TGL have started a small photography program at the center, to help the children learn to express themselves and help others to see the world as they experience it. Our team will help teach photography to the kids, while also taking time to play, encourage, and shoot away! Outside of our time with the kids, we will also explore Cusco and its surrounding areas, before heading to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu.

More about Picaflor House

And work with Picaflor House in Cusco, PeruPicaflor House works with disadvantaged or impoverished children struggling in Cusco, Peru. Some of the children are orphans, while others just lack basic support and needs. We will be doing a camera drive to collect more cameras for its budding photography club, plus a few laptops to help them have an outlet for expression and a way to explore their creativity. We know it will also help build self-esteem.

Picaflor House is a grassroots organization that is completely locally run. Currently they teach English classes, arts and crafts, dance, sports, and reading. Its focus is to get children off of the street, support families, and provide education. They also hope to be a haven for trafficked girls in the near future.

More About The Giving Lens

people sitting around a computer Founded by my friend and photographer extraordinaire Colby Brown, The Giving Lens is about using travel photography to give back to those in need.

The organization’s vision is to see the three things its founder and staff love most come together for a greater good: our love of travel, our passion for photography, and our deep desire to give back to those in need.

The people behind The Giving Lens believe they can make a difference. They build trips that takes your hand and places it in the hand of a worthy Non-Profit doing incredible work. They get a whole team of willing photographers to that nation and facilitate unique experiences on the ground. Together, we volunteer our cameras, hearts, time, and energy in whatever way the Non-Profit needs most. Sometimes this is by documenting their work for media and website purposes. Other times it is by teaching photography classes to kids who need creative outlets to express themselves. And yet other times it can be physically getting our hands dirty and helping out. There is no limit to what we are capable of. Each trip is different and offers a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
